Film has a unique ability to tell a story, not despite, but because it is a controlled sequence of moving images. Literature has a unique ability to tell a story, not in spite of, but because of the need to translate events into written language, forcing the reader to use their own imagination . Theater has unique ways of telling a story, not despite, but because it is live, unreproducible, and immediate. The same is true of the computer game : it has unique ways of telling a story, not though, but because it's a game
Achievement & Exploration shows how the dramaturgy of a computer game works, how it is created and how it can be analyzed. The author investigates the basic structure of stories, regardless of the medium they convey, and why people tell them and have always been fascinated by them. Using game theory, evolutionary psychology and structural texts, a dramaturgical model of the computer game is derived that describes its unique characteristics.
This model is used in clear and understandable language to understand the fascinating history of the development of computer games as a story-telling medium. Using well-known examples such as The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Thief - The Dark Project, Half-Life, Fallout 3 or Dark Souls, the author analyzes how a computer game tells a story and why the medium offers new and unique ways and means of doing so: Achievement & Exploration.
