Peter Just, Rudolf Thomas Inderst
Since the second half of the 20th century, the human body has seemed to be a central factor in our perception: we are increasingly trying to understand it, to discover it, but also to change it or even optimize it according to very different ideas.
The concept of “physicality” is also no stranger to cultural anthropological research in recent years. For example, gender research is no longer the only focus of attention on socially constructed gender. Nevertheless, the interested handling of bodies has so far only applied to a limited extent to the discipline of game studies. This anthology aims to close this gap
It brings together authors from a wide range of disciplines. In their contributions, they describe the construction and deconstruction of physicality, which appears in video and computer games in a variety of ways and with which every player - consciously or unconsciously - is confronted.
Topics such as character editors, the simulation of the phenomenon of pain on the screen, the body as an input device, the "death" of the game characters or games as possible support instruments in healing processes are dealt with. The topics are as diverse as the tone of the contributions - the spectrum ranges from journalistic-essayistic to well-founded-scientific.
