Mathieu Goux
This book offers an analysis of video games inspired by the grammar of natural human languages. By considering interaction as central to the language of video games, this study introduces and explores a new fundamental unit of meaning, the "interacteme," defined as the smallest accessible unit of interaction within a given game. It distinguishes itself from the "ludeme" or gameplay brick through a series of formal properties that underpin its specificity and originality within the broader domain of gaming. This approach offers a fresh perspective on the medium, taking into account its rich history and numerous variations in terms of genre, intellectual aspects, and gameplay.
The book defines and illustrates the dimensions of this unit and explores its relationships with elements specific to video games, such as difficulty, pacing, and rewards, as well as those related to its broader media dimension, including music, narrative, level design, and philosophy. It does so from an interdisciplinary standpoint at the intersection of structural linguistics and semiotics.
This essay on systemic grammar in video games aims to bridge various scientific disciplines and foster dialogue between the language sciences and game or play studies. It draws inspiration from the achievements of modern linguistics to propose a new analytical framework for video games, applicable to all their manifestations regardless of their origin, age, genre, content, or control mechanisms.
