In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the endeavor to understand games created a great debate between game science (ludology) and narratology (narratology). While one side argued that digital games were in-game mechanics and indirectly a product of detailed coding, the other side claimed that every game had a narrative. As a matter of fact, as academics researching in the field of game studies today, we know the following: In today's game world, there is a wide variety of games in which both titles are predominant.

It is obvious that mechanics play an important role in game production. With the emergence of different mechanics, games have diversified, some have pioneered the definition of game genres, while others have remained as mere copies. Today, we are living in a period where the "thing" that makes a game a game is questioned in many ways. Games, which are becoming more and more simulated, have become very different from the games of the 90s with the developing graphics and artificial intelligence technologies.

Our book, Digital Games 3.0 Games and Mechanics, explores this transformation and the position of games today. In this book, which brings together academics researching in the field of game studies, there are many articles on the changes in game mechanics over time and the intersections with narrative.
