To write critically and engagingly about digital games is still a rare phenomenon in the German-speaking world. However, it was with this intention that a small group of authors came together in 2010 and established the Games Department in the "TITEL Kulturmagazin." A few years later, the virtual editorial move took place to Switzerland to the cultural journal "Nahaufnahmen.ch."
Over the course of a decade, numerous contributions to debates on video and computer games were created. Not only well-known game titles like "Super Mario Odyssey," "Dark Souls," and "The Last of Us 2" are addressed but also many hidden gems from independent game development. In addition, observations from game fairs and festivals, as well as surprising connections of the medium with other areas of art and culture, are included. Sometimes the authors lean towards the classical recommendation journalism of days gone by, sometimes towards the feuilleton, and occasionally, entirely new paths are explored with more experimental formats. Always with the aim of writing entertaining and inspiring content about the cultural asset of games.
This volume serves as a cross-section of the entire ten-year journey that the dedicated department has undertaken.
