GAME CULTURES: FUNCTIONS AND MEANINGS OF PLAY IN CONTEMPORARY CULTURE AND EVERYDAY DISCOURSE

Bettina Schlüter, Ibrahim Mazari, Jeffrey Wimmer, Jochen Koubek, Lea Niggemann, Matthias Heinzerling, Michaela Haberlander, Michael Guthe, Michael Mosel, Rudolf Thomas Inderst, Stefan Werning, Winfred Kaminski

The public discourse about video games often narrows down to terms like addiction or violence. Nevertheless, it has been observed recently that certain functional areas of Western post-industrial cultures are being 'infiltrated' by gaming phenomena. The range of application fields for game mechanisms extends from educational enhancement to modeling conflict situations and even to economic purposes.

This anthology presents selected contributions from the conference "Game Cultures" at the University of Bayreuth, which took place on February 15-16, 2013. The aim of this anthology is to comprehensively address the complexity of contemporary gaming culture from various perspectives, without glorifying or condemning the medium. Instead, a constructive discussion is necessary, to which this anthology contributes. Eleven authors each contribute their specialized view on the mediatization of play to broaden the thematic scope of the public discourse.

The book is richly illustrated and is intended not only for game researchers but also for gaming enthusiasts interested in the multifaceted discussion about video games, offering a different viewpoint on the debate surrounding the medium.
