Michiel Smit
In 'Gameboy', Michiel Smit tells the personal story of his gaming addiction. From the moment Smit gets a Gameboy as a five-year-old, he is lost. What starts as a game of gaming in the backseat gradually changes into nightly sessions in the computer room. The two-dimensional gaming realities increasingly take up his mind. Even when he plays outside with friends or tries to survive at school, he is driven by the binary reality of computer games. Win-lose, life-death.
In the meantime, he still functions so well that no one recognizes what is happening to him. While his thoughts become darker and human contact becomes increasingly difficult for him, from the outside it doesn't seem like much more is wrong than that he is a difficult teenager. The turning point comes when he is a student at a lecture about the addicted brain. Suddenly he understands why his life keeps getting stuck in the same patterns, at the same time he also realizes that it is not too late to do something about it.
