198X FAMICOM RHAPSODY

Gōzō Shiozaki

A former Famitsu editor-in-chief recounts the untold history of gaming journalism!

One day, legendary editor Fumitaka Kojima told me, "You're banned from programming from now on." With that, I—Tōfuya Famibō—took my first steps into the world of game journalism.

I began working as a part-time writer for Login magazine, where I helped launch the Famicom Tsūshin section as the younger sibling of Video Game Tsūshin.

Along the way, I met fellow editors like Mizuno Store Manager and Game Center Ueno, as well as game designer Yūji Horii (a.k.a. Yūbō). My journey didn't stop at writing—I soon ventured into game development as well.

This is the first autobiography from a former Famitsu editor-in-chief, offering a firsthand account of the early days of video games, the meteoric rise of the Famicom, and the transformation of Famicom Tsūshin from a small column in Login into Japan’s number one gaming magazine!
