INTERMEDIALITY: VIDEO GAMES, CINEMA, TELEVISION, COMICS

Thiéry Adam, Luca Ballico, Matteo Bittanti, Diane Carr, Chris Cooling, Mario Gerosa, Richard J. Hand, Matt Kimmich, Michael Nitsche, Laurie Taylor

This collective work explores, at various levels, the relationship between video games and other media, especially cinema, television, and comics. What unites the different contributions is the desire to finally acknowledge digital ludus for what it is: a medium with its own status, autonomy, and peculiarities through direct comparison with other artistic and cultural expressions. The authors' ambition is to provide a possible solution to an increasingly widespread problem: the proliferation of naive approaches that confuse marketing strategies with revolutionary cultural production practices. Rather than manifestos, slogans, and numbered lists, we prefer to offer case study analyses.

This work represents the culmination of a reflection that has engaged researchers from various backgrounds and training, spread across Italy, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
