LOST IN TRANSLATION: PERFORMANCE, USE, AND LIMITS OF EMULATORS IN LONG-TERM PRESERVATION OF GAMES

Digitalization has deeply penetrated our culture. The long-term preservation and utilization of digital objects pose new demands on conceptual and technical solutions.


As the only feasible approach to preserve complex multimedia digital artifacts such as computer games and digital art, the replication of original systems through emulation has proven to be a digital translation technology. Lost in Translation addresses the possibilities and applications of emulation techniques as preservation strategies in digital long-term archiving.


Computer games are particularly suitable for such examination, as they push the technical capabilities of computer systems, authenticity in playback, and the performance practice of high importance, and they – in the tension between mass production and art – reveal the ruptures and limits of a technology or medium.


The author dedicates himself to the heart of this technology – the emulators. Their functionality as translators for digital artifacts and their development environment are examined in detail, thus revealing and describing inherent, technical, pragmatic, legal, and socio-economic constraints of this preservation strategy.
