Anton Steiner
The computer game has a remarkable potential to tell stories without using language and to arouse emotions that no other medium can arouse.
"Loud \ Game / Speech" is dedicated to the 'Zen adventure game', in which a peaceful, meditative gameplay is combined with adventurous, narrative elements. On the basis of the games Journey, Abzû and Gris, reception-aesthetic characteristics and non-linguistic narrative strategies of this avant-garde genre are examined with a special focus on the game world, character and gameplay.
The connections between meditation and adventure, story and play, sound and language are illustrated in an interdisciplinary context between media, game and storytelling theory, art and cultural studies and philosophy. The theoretical starting point is the radical language criticism, sometimes bordering on the absurd, of Fritz Mauthner, who throughout his life demanded that people detach themselves from language and who probably found the Zen adventure very appealing.
