Video games, board games, and literary and audiovisual fictions are more than mere escapes; they are prisms through which we try to understand the world around us. In this sense, an interesting way to delve into the understanding of the imaginary is the comparative analysis of these types of cultural productions, seeking meaningful convergences and contrasts.
This book proposes the conceptualization and exploration of the ludonarrative imaginary, that liminal space where the meanings of play, video games, and fiction intertwine in the social imaginary. Using the theory of the imaginary as a guiding thread, the book presents five perspectives of intertextual analysis on this issue, integrating aspects from various disciplines and fields of knowledge: cultural studies, game studies, film studies, literary theory. Each chapter offers an application of the proposed perspective, reviewing various facets of the socio-cultural imaginary from the economic crisis of 2008 to the current post-pandemic era, through the lenses of fiction and (video)games.
The initial chapters focus on post-apocalyptic narratives and their resonances with the socio-discursive context of economic recession, paying attention to visual motifs that traverse both cinema and video games; for example, the motif of the father walking with his son/daughter amidst the disaster.
Throughout the book, contemporary transformations of cyberpunk and the Lovecraftian universe are also explored, addressing issues such as the postcyberpunk's commonplace aspect, Lovecraft's gamification, and the tensions between mainstream assimilation and alternative (re)creations of these ludonarrative imaginaries.
The final chapter delves into contemporary melancholic science fiction, through television fiction and indie video games that evoke the question of digital disenchantment and invite critical reflection on the imaginaries of technology, including late 20th-century science fiction.
