Machinima has its origins in so-called open innovations, which were realized by users through copyright infringements and commercialized by the media industry. As a collaborative phenomenon of computer gaming, Machinima brought together creative practices of ego-shooter modding, filmmaking, and online communities, thus laying the foundation for a political economy of the platform.
