Harald Horchler
Welcome to the stone age of computer games! The first volume in the "Makers of New Worlds" series already provided a deep insight into the computer games industry of the 1980s and 1990s. This second volume supplements volume 1. It completes and expands the picture of the then still small industry, which did not dare to dream of the sales figures for today's computer games. Even then, visions and plans for new game concepts and innovative ideas were already in place.
Some companies have disappeared into oblivion today and hardly anyone knows their names or the games they published. Others have now become multi-million dollar companies: Sierra, Microprose and Cinemaware are now among the industry giants. Some companies have undergone major structural changes: Atari, formerly a manufacturer of gaming machines, home computers and video consoles, has now concentrated on computer games and is very successful at it. Two detailed articles show how Atari was founded and quickly became the "shooting star" of the industry (and the stock market). If the illustrations were in color, they are also reproduced in color in this volume.
