Frank Zappa used to say that talking about music is like dancing about architecture. The same can be said of the video game and the criticism that tries, often without a clear methodology, to explain in words an artifact that can only be understood empirically.
With Masters of Interactive Horror I have tried to make those words, at least, sound familiar to all kinds of readers: regular gamers and non-fans of the genre, but also students and scholars of audiovisual narrative and procedural rhetoric. Horror is a form of artistic expression with centuries of wisdom. It is up to the video game to account for the new and fun forms of interactive horror and to honor its ancestors, those of fertile prose and overwhelming staging. However, this work is not an encyclopedia of survival horror or a list of the scariest games, but rather a meticulous effort to understand the springs, the keys and the reasons for terror in the video game as a means of expression, combining theoretical language and the jargon "gamer", and trusting that the result does not resemble, of course, an architecture dance.
