PIX'N LOVE #38: TOMB RAIDER

Marine Alexandre, Benjamin Berget, Michaël Guarné, Yannick Le Fur, Joris Lelong, Christophe Mallet, Raphaël Pezet, Alexandre Serel

Since its inception, Pix'n Love has made it its mission to safeguard the heritage of video games by telling them from the inside. For that, nothing beats meeting the actors of the time, those programmers, musicians, artists and others who made video games such a rich medium. Unfortunately, this desire often comes up against the pangs of passing time, with certain figures having disappeared from the radar...

When The Story of Tomb Raider was released in 2017, its author, Alexandre Serel, although he had accomplished an impressive investigative work, was still saddened by this state of affairs: he had not succeeded in make contact with the two fathers of Tomb Raider, Toby Gard and Paul Douglas. But the latter finally came forward on his own following the publication of the book, delivering essential testimony, as a founder, which it would have been a shame not to share.

The news of the video game industry is regularly punctuated with cases recalling the precarious status of its heroes in the shadows. We learn here and there that the very day after the release of a game, some of its designers have been left absent in the credits. That hundreds of others are fired even though their employers are amassing billions. The horrendous work environments and toxic atmosphere. The countless cases of harassment.

The story of Paul Douglas cruelly reminds us, is that the exploitation of video game workers is not new. This number #38 of Pix'n Love therefore devotes itself to the co-creator of Lara Croft, a programmer as talented as she is modest who has never, or so rarely, given interviews. He gives us here the creative process that gave birth to the founding entry in the series that would become one of the worlds most popular in video games. Please note, this is not a success story. Or at least not his.
