On December 13, 2015, the Working Group on History and Digital Games (AKGWDS) was founded in a small group. At that time, its twenty founding members were united above all by their common research interest in history and digital games and the goal of more firmly anchoring game studies in German-language historical science. A blog followed, a manifesto and many other members with new ideas, all of which has meant that not only have more than seven years passed since then, but also that a lot has happened in and around the AKGWDS.
With Playful Past, a team of editors from the AKGWDS is now presenting a diverse collection of articles published in print for the first time from the first seven years of the working group’s existence on topics such as historical authenticity, digital games in (history) lessons, medieval and Viking pictures, NS history in the digital game and much more.
