The media of literature, film, television, and computer games have long been interacting with each other in various ways. They contain themselves, intertwine, reference one another, and blend together.
Amidst these numerous intersections of media, between the concrete practices of players and scholarly methods, between everyday life and theory, Playing in-between takes its place.
Working closely with the material, the individual contributions in this anthology examine processes of intermedial references, transmedial narratives, and crossmedial connections. The exploration of these diverse relationships opens up new perspectives and research approaches: What forms do the interactions between literature, film, television, and the comparatively young medium of computer games take? And to what extent do they create new spaces for interpretation in terms of aesthetic couplings and ruptures, as well as narrative patterns?
The goal of this book is thus to investigate computer games from multifaceted aspects of intermediality, referencing various media. This aims to contribute to the discourse on the heterogeneous phenomenon of intermediality, highlighting the interactions between old and new media and seeking to uncover their particularities, qualities, weaknesses, and strengths.
