Sebastian Felzmann
"Everything was better in the past" - in this work the author examines whether this expression of deeply felt nostalgia may also apply to a medium that is as up-to-date and constantly evolving as computer games. Because it is precisely the electronic games that live from constantly outperforming their predecessors. What is "state of the art" today may already be outdated and "old school" tomorrow. But maybe these "old school" games have their very special magic and effect?
Based on the writings of Maurice Halbwachs and Jan & Aleida Assmann, the author provides a concentrated overview of the most relevant theories on collective and cultural memory. These theories are linked to fundamental investigations into nostalgia in order to finally be able to define them as a mode of glorified memory.
This glorified memory and its effects are then first tested in the established medium of Hollywood film, before finally being proven as a specific nostalgia for technology and media in computer games. Retro gaming, gaming nostalgia and 8-bit longing are explained in the same way as the longing of today's "C64 generation" for their roots and the computer hardware of the first hour.
The theories presented are explained using numerous examples and illustrations from the game and film, so that they can be quickly understood without much prior knowledge.
