Theater does it, literature and fine arts frequently engage in it, and film consistently showcases it to its audience—the deliberate exploration of oneself, one's medium, its potentials, and constraints.
This study delves into the phenomenon of explicit self-reference, both aesthetically and thematically, within the realm of computer games. While this has long been a topic of interest in cultural studies, spanning various media and art forms, the hybrid nature of computer games, although no longer in their infancy, has yet to comprehensively address the self-reflective strategies present within them.
Beyond the theoretical and conceptual examination of "computer games" and "self-reference," and the establishment of their mutual relevance, this study meticulously analyzes specific case studies. Furthermore, it attempts to reconfigure a typology in contrast to existing models for categorizing self-reflexivity. Building on these aspects, it ultimately illuminates the question surrounding the functional orientation of acts of self-thematization within computer games.
