Marcel Schellong, Martin Hennig
Surveillance and control are central themes in the discourse of contemporary digital culture. In this context, video games have a distinct role, as they can, on one hand, in the tradition of narrative history, build upon the representation and negotiation of surveillance and control found in other forms of media. On the other hand, the specific gameplay mechanics of video games offer an expanded perspective on the forms of surveillance and control within digital media and presently serve as a pivotal site for their reflection.
This volume gathers twelve contributions from media and cultural studies, exploring surveillance and control within video games as narrative motifs and gameplay structures, while also contextualizing digital games as components of surveillance and control societies.
