Óliver Pérez Latorre
What pleasures do contemporary popular fiction, video games, and social media offer us? Why do we get hooked on certain television series and social websites? What is in the script or design of our favorite series and video games that gives us such memorable emotional experiences? Why do we tend to re-disseminate and share some "memes" more than others?
Starting from these questions, this essay proposes a reflection on the design of entertainment experiences in contemporary culture. Entertainment is approached through two aspects: on one hand, the cognitive activities and emotional experiences that make up the user experience; on the other, the design strategies of the creators aimed at promoting engagement.
What is presented in the book as the "art of entertainment" resides, precisely, in the potential connections between both aspects. Throughout the essay, various theories on audiovisual narrative, video game design, and viral culture are explored, along with cognitive narratology, entertainment psychology, and biocultural humanities.
The aim is to better understand the appeal of new formats and phenomena in contemporary popular entertainment, while acknowledging that there are fundamental principles of entertainment beyond "fashions," media, or specific trends—principles that still largely remain a mystery.
