So-called "interactive films" are a media-historical phenomenon that has found new forms of expression in "new media" time and again since the 1960s. The currently most popular representatives can be found in the console and PC games from Quantic Dream, Supermassive Games and Telltale Games. It is striking how often these games are also about addressing moral issues. In contrast to the classic cinema film, these can only be answered with the participation of the recipient.
This interplay between the media framework and subjective interpretation is the focus of this book. The social-scientific tradition of symbolic interactionism is intended to help here: "Symbolic interactivity" mediates between a defined, symbolic offer and an individual, situational handling of it. When playing interactive films, we refer to self-referential, intertextual, and metaphorical signs to create meaning in our own gamer's life.
