The Great Graphic Purge is the name given to the period of time that saw the rise and fall of graphics chip manufacturers. It started with the founding of S3 and ended with AMD’s buyout of ATI. During this period, we went from having almost eighty companies to only three.
Of the three, ATI and Nvidia are potentially well known, as their importance transcended from computers to decoders, consoles, mobile phones, cinemas and anywhere that a chip was needed for a screen. While from 1985 onward, ATI focused on mass office sales, Nvidia took a more ambitious approach to high-quality 3D and more aggressive cycles since the company was founded in 1996. It wasn’t until 2000 that their two paths crossed, which, together with the fall of many companies, gave rise to one of the biggest wars ever seen in the high-tech industry. The consequences of this war can still be seen to this day across all fields.
Get ready to learn about their tory, their trials and tribulations, their cards, how they faced off in all areas, the ports they used and the markets they looked to conquer. Two companies that were born from nothing who, in a matter of fifteen years, became the heart of the computing world and capable of shaping the entire industry, leaving established companies in their wake and leading to revolutions including the digital age and mobile devices.
