In the late 1970s, Japan was about to explode in a good way. The country's economy is in good shape, ready to support the digital revolution that has already begun in California with the rise of personal computers. Admiring, Japanese electronics manufacturers produce their own models, and quickly, machines like the NEC PC-8001 or the Sharp MZ-80K allow pupils and students to learn about programming. At the same time, Space Invaders met with worldwide success, and a lot of software was imported from the United States. Logically, our young budding programmers turn to video games.
In about ten years, Japan has taken over the video game to adapt it to its sauce. This book intends to give voice to some of the developers who have contributed to the movement. Some are known, others less so. Some invented genres, others magnified those that already existed. There have been friendships and rivalries, successes and failures. This overview is of course not exhaustive, and the testimonies collected here are to be taken for what they are: personal accounts of an era during which Japan redefined the notion of video games. .
