THE PLURALIZATION OF GAME CULTURES AND SOCIETIES

Games, a composite form of media that emerges from the networks and hybrids of people and objects. A complex medium that crosses boundaries in the reciprocal influences of the media mix, surpassing distinctions between individual games, or the analog/digital division. In addition to this, multiple game cultures of the different environments of play and development conditions spanning a variety of genres. This collection considers games in their pluralization through these lenses, by offering points of view informed by a broad set of concerns, which include players and games, as well as their relationship with the social context in which they are immersed.

The meanings of these three aspects are relatively independent, but there are several points of close contact. What these phenomena share is the fact that all of them fall under the purview of "games" in the broader society. In other words, this volume does not just consider the rules and fictions of the texts, but also their players and cultural and social contexts. However, this is not our own creative approach. In a sense, this is an orthodox view, as we are building on sociology of culture, computer science, and media studies, among other fields.


Currently, it is not just home consoles, PC, or arcades that are very popular, as earlier forms of play such as board games and TRPG, among other analog games are garnering attention once again. In addition to that, new VR and AR games keep appearing one after the other. It seems only appropriate to speak of a future where games come in plural forms. The aim of this volume is to capture the connections to culture and society of this plurality.
