Eugen Pfister, Tobias Unterhuber
For some time now, the meaningless pseudo and combative term “cultural Marxism” used by the political right has been buzzing through the gaming scene and is used to denounce ideological opponents and to boycott games. At the same time, however, there are also implicit and explicit left-wing positions in the field of computer games and computer game research.
But how can Marx/Marxism and digital games be thought of together? Are work and play in a contradictory relationship to each other? How can we think of the computer game medium in terms of content and form as well as production and reception in this tension? But also: how can we view computer games as part of the ideological apparatus that justifies our society's worst impulses and realities, which at the same time can provide meanings and traditions that challenge this apparatus?
We can find possible answers by going back to Marx and in the discourses he initiated.
