Portal is not a game like the others. It arrived without warning, in 2007, in the middle of a compilation, The Orange Box , made up of five Valve games, three of which were unreleased. While among these novelties, Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 could have overshadowed it until it fell into oblivion, Portal was able to impose itself as the surprise that no one was waiting. The unknown, off the beaten track, which was to mark the history of video games.
Followed in 2011 by a second part which honorably met the expectations placed on it, Portal has established itself as a license respected and loved by players. Its uniqueness, its humor and its gameplay have helped to give it an aura extending beyond the video game world, integrating the cultural sphere with world-famous memes such as “ The cake is a lie. “, the character of GLaDOS or the companion-cube.
This book looks back on the creation of the two installments, detailing the creative process and the hazards that the Valve teams went through to design these puzzle-games in first-person view. It also tells the story, not always explicit, which is hidden behind this incredible diptych, before analyzing some of the elements that may explain the strong critical success of the games with the specialized press and gamers alike.
