Julien Goyon
When Mistwalker was founded, Hironobu Sakaguchi's studio crystallized a broad range of expectations among Japanese role-playing gamers. Its first titles are announced with fanfare, and this return to the creation of the father of Final Fantasy is synonymous with general enthusiasm, especially since the other big names involved in these projects betray the overflowing ambition of the young company. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey met with mixed reviews when they came out, criticizing them for relying on far too classic bases. Still, it would be unfair not to recognize Sakaguchi's talent for simple yet emotional plots in their writing.
Imperfect as it is, The Last Story is an important title. Important for the Japanese role-playing game, in the first place, since it comes out at a time when the genre is struggling to renew itself. Important, then, for its director, Hironobu Sakaguchi, because this project is a strong symbol of his questioning as an emblematic figure of the J-RPG.
