VIRTUAL MEMORY: 20th CENTURY WARS IN COMPUTER GAMES

Steffen Bender

Computer games that depict history are part of a popular culture of remembrance: they design historical narratives and thereby generate images of history. As a memory medium, games move in a field of tension between the demand for a realistic representation of history and the possibilities and limitations of the medium. Steffen Bender addresses the question, which has so far hardly been dealt with in historical science, of how the media specifics of computer games affect this virtual memory and which narrative patterns can be observed in the depiction of historical wars of the 20th century.
