Winfried Kumpitsch
By Jupiter! What do ancient gods, medieval cathedrals and a current research debate in Nordic archeology have in common? The answer: They are linked by one of the great German video game series of the 90s and early 2000s: The Settlers.
This book represents a case study of the diverse ways in which content from the history of religion is processed and presented in the four games examined in the series. Based on the analysis scheme by Oliver Steffen and the adaptation of the Petri nets by Vít Šisler, the areas of the stories told by the game, the graphic design and the game mechanics associated with religion are examined separately with regard to their role models in reality, but also with regard to their authenticity assessed.
The book is therefore not only aimed at readers who are interested in the scientific analysis of the role of religion in video games, but also at all those who are interested in the question of how much "real" religious-historical knowledge can be found in video games.
It is introduced with a brief overview of the history of The Settlers ; the graphic level of the games is illustrated by an extensive picture catalogue, so that people who are not part of the series can also follow the explanations.
